Old school players

So looking back there were some good footballers that I use to enjoy watching that played on other teams.
I always liked Stan Bowles, Matt Le Tissier and Frank worthington.
Who do you look back on as a favorite.

For goal scorers I always remember Kenny Hibbet for Wolves, he was always banging them in, so was Ian Rush…..

I would place Michael Laudrup in the top 10 of all time, a genius with an incredible range of passing, on top of his dribbling skills and finishing, etc.

Can also remember Jeff Astle and Sniffer Clarke playing. Astle missed a sitter against Brazil, the greatest side ever and Sniffer scored a penalty.
I might be wrong but not a bad crack.

Russ, same here mate. I tried to watch any game he was in after that whenever I got the chance (his brother was very good too). He had everything - speed, control, passing, tackling, heading and was tall and strong too. But he was so calm. Incredible player - had a great career.

Yep, true. They didn't have the best keepers. What a team though. Only went out in 86 on penalties too.

I remember first seeing Laudrup in the 86 WC.
I knew of Maradona before that. We were on holiday in Spain for 82 WC and I remember seeing glimpses of him play and the blokes in the hotel cheering and raving about him when Argentina played. He'd gone to Napoli a year or so before 86 WC and was ripping it up. So I knew him.
But, as a fresh-faced eleven-year-old with limited access to football on TV, I'd never seen or heard of Laudrup, so came with added mystery. Which for me added to his persona. I watched Denmark play Uruguay and he was on another planet. I'd never seen anything like it. His calm, ruthless approach with that quiet but steely determination was captivating. His ability with the ball and his awareness was breath-taking. He was tall and athletic and very unassuming. I compared him to Bjorn Bjorg.
The goal he scored in that Uruguay game was special. He dribbled around 3 or 4 defenders, drew the keeper out and took it past him and then slotted in from an impossible angle. The crowd cheered and I sat there open mouthed.
I'll always remember it because as Laudrup wheeled away in delight the commentator said "Magnificent. The boy's a genius." Then just let the crowd cheering and the moment flow into people's homes through the TV.

Brilliant, such a shame it wasn't televised in some form. Was it Budgie Byrne who ran riot that night? Another top top player, missed out on 66 through injury I think. Remember reading Rom Greenwoods book and he upset Don Revie that night I think. So much so that Revie apparently told his players "you will never lose to that man's team again!" He was right I think!!

Yea,although he didnt score, Leeds had no answer to Byrne, he pulled every string that could be pulled.
Quite sure Revie said "no one will ever do that to a team of mine again". Could be wrong tho.

I was over there for the 7-0 game. In modern terms i guess the 7-2 Villa/Liverpool game during covid is a fair comparison.
And yes,Coppell and Hill were a forwards dream.

Gordon Cowans was decent, not as good as Sir Trevor (obviously) or Hoddle for that matter but still a good elegant playmaker.

Can't believe West Ham beat that Leeds team what was it 7-0 in the League Cup or something? As far as I know there is no video recording of it so sad you can't see it. Out and out wingers have vanished from the game. Always remember Coppell and Hill at Man United, they would be Scammaca's dream! You look at the forward players back then and any of the top 10 would walk into the England team now.

It seamed almost every team had one completely flair player in the 70s - It is a rare thing now.
Most had a team hard case as well (in the case of Leeds quite a few). Kenny Burns was pretty typical.
